    Latrodectism is the clincial syndrome caused by a neurotoxic venom that can be injected by the bite of any spiders that are members of the spidergenus Latrodectus The most well known of these spiders would probablybe the Black Widow Spider (L mactans)


    If enough venom is injected into a person's body initially a severe painin local muscle groups occurs which then spreads to regional muscle groups
    The pain is then followed by severe cramps and contraction of musculaturemay extend throughout the body though abdominal cramps arefrequently the most severe For this reason latrodectism canmimic other things such an Appendicitis
    Symptoms that may be present at or near the wound:
    • Slight erythema (redness of skin)
    • Piloerection (goose bumps)
    • Mild edema (swelling due to excess fluid)
    • Urtication (rash)

    Other possible symptoms:
    • Headache
    • Restlessness
    • Anxiety
    • Fatigue
    • Insomnia
    • Salivation
    • Lacrimation (tearing of the eyes)
    • Diaphoresis (excessive sweating)
    • Tremors
    • Tachycardia (rapid heart beat)
    • Bradycardia (very slow heart beat)
    • Hypertension (elevated blood pressure)

    In some rare and extreme cases:
    • Priapism
    • Acute renal failure (failing of kidney function)
    • Shock
    • Coma

    Although severe symptoms suchs as shock and coma are known to have happeneddeath due to latrodectism is rare
